A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, pointing to a sharp shift in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
