Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
